Interview with Candace Nelson at Pizzana

On Friday, I met up with my good friend, Caroline, to interview the founder of Pizzana and Sprinkles Cupcakes, Candace Nelson. Nelson is a businesswoman that took the food industry by storm. She opened the first cupcake bakery, Sprinkles, in Los Angeles that expanded to other locations around the US.  She recently opened Pizzana, a restaurant that serves delicious pizza and salads. Read below to find out more about Candace and Pizzana! 

Her Inspirations: 

When I asked Candace who her inspiration was she said it was her great-grandmother and her mother. Nelsons' great-grandmother was a restaurant owner in San Fransisco during The Great Depression. Although she never met her, she learned about her through her mom. As she heard more stories about her great-grandmother, Candace's love for baking expanded. Like her daughter, Candace's mother also loved to bake. Nelson recalls the two baking and trying new food experiences together.   

Candace's Favorites: 

The founder's favorites include the Margarita pizza with added prosciutto and arugula and the cacio e pepe pizza.   

Pizzana Memories: 

Candace wants customers to walk away with one feeling... Nostalgia. After a meal at Pizzana, customers should remember "happy pizza memories" like their 5th-grade pizza party or when they shared a slice with their soccer team after a game. In general, dining at the restaurant should be an elevated pizza experience, but with comfort. I have dined at Pizzana a couple of times, and I can assure you-you definitely get that experience!  

Nelson's Advice:   

Her advice to anyone who wants to start a business? Have passion and experience. You need passion to fuel your business and experience to perfect it. However, the experience doesn't have to be direct, you can apply skills from other jobs to contribute to your business. You also have to take risks and manage them.  

Free Time: 

When she has free time, Nelson enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, making dinner, and going to the beach. She enjoys the simple pleasure of life and likes to share them with her family.
